As I've mentioned in a couple of my posts so far, I'm an 'all-round' female fight fan. I'll enjoy a gallery of karate kicking ladies just as much as I would a pro-wrestling match on video or a competitive submission wrestling bout at a live event.
And yet, there has always been one form of female combat that does nothing for me. Ironically perhaps, as it is the one genre that often defines our interest, at least to other people. All me mates know about my interest in female combat, but to them that means I'm into 'catfighting'. Indeed, for most people, the term 'catfight' simply applies to any female fight on TV or in movies, where two women are battling. It can be a fistfight,a brawl, a martial arts battle, but to a mainstream audience that is a 'catfight'. As fans, we know better. A catfight is a specific genre, as unique within our field of interest as a boxing match or a wrestling bout. It is also, perhaps, the most intense form of female combat... so why does it leave me so unmoved? Maybe it's because I have an appeciation for seeing moves or techniques, be that the athletic displays in a pro-wrestling match or the tightly applied holds in a submission contest. These are largely absent from a catfight, where the main weapon in a catfighter's arsenal is the pulling of her opponent's hair. But then, there are the more subtle differences. I've commissioned a number of custom videos from the always awesome Sleeperkid's World featuring the beautiful Sumiko against various opponents, that have become known as the 'Fists of Sumiko' series. In each video, Sumiko mercilessly dominates her opponent with a relentless display of punching and kicking. So how come I find that so hot, and yet a slap to the face so dull? Strangely, maybe it is the 'realism' of catfights that puts me off. For all my love of female combat, it's always about the fantasy. Party cos I don't wanna see someone get genuinely hurt, but also cos fantasy tends to present fights in a more 'stylised' way. For me, a catfight is just a fight. It can take place in controlled conditions, of course, but I struggle to differentiate between a well produced catfight and the 'real' fights often posted on youtube. Don't misunderstand me, I am not criticising catfights, or their fans. Essentially, I am just curious as to what those fans get out of them. If you're one of those fans, I'd love to know, why do you enjoy a good catfight? We all have different tastes, different preferences. Catfights have just always been that one preference that's appeal has always eluded me. |
